The Green Gram, also known as moong bean, mung, or golden gram, is the seed of Vigna radiata, native to India. It is one of the major pulse crops in the country. Moong beans are small, ovoid in shape, and green in color. Moong beans are commonly used in salads, soups, curries, and various other dishes.
Types of Green Gram:
1. Whole Green Gram: Retains the outer skin, providing a more textured dish. Its can be consumed as whole or as bean sprouts, either raw, soaked, or boiled.
2. Split Green Gram (Moong Dal): The seed is split, often used for dals and soups
Green gram is an excellent source of protein, especially for the vegetarian population, providing about 25% protein—three times more than cereals.
